- Shin Kokin Wakashu
Mi no hodo o omoitsuzukuru yūgure no ogi no uwaha ni kaze wataru nari
In the evening, brooding on what my own condition is, I hear a wind passing over the upper leaves of the reeds.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Minamoto no Yukimune
Aki wa tada mono o koso omoe tsuyu kakaru ogi no ue fuku kaze ni tsukete mo
In autumn I do nothing but brood, at everything, even at the wind that blows over the dew-hung reeds.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - The Daughter of Minamoto no Shigeyuki
Akikaze no yaya hadasamuku fuku nae ni ogi no uwaha no oto zo kanashiki
As the autumn wind blows a little cold on the skin, the sound of the reeds' upper leaves is a sad one.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Mototoshi
Ogi no ha ni fukeba arashi no aki naru o machikeru yowa no saoshika no koe
It is a season in which the wind on the reeds becomes a storm; and this is what had been waiting for it, the stag's voice at midnight.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yoshitsune
Oshinabete omoishi koto no kazukazu ni nao iro masaru aki no yūgure
Deeper than all the many things I have brooded on, the colour deepens still: an evening in autumn.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yoshitsune
Kurekakaru munashiki sora no aki o mite oboezu tamaru sode no tsuyu kana
Looking at the autumn of an empty sky as it darkens, I find, without knowing how, the dew gathered on my sleeve.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yoshitsune
Mono omowade kakaru tsuyu ya wa sode ni oku nagametekeri na aki no yūgure
Would such dew settle on my sleeve if I were not brooding? So I have been gazing after all, at the autumn evening.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yoshitsune
Miyamaji ya itsu yori aki no iro naramu mizarishi kumo no yūgure no sora
From what hour has the deep mountain road worn the colours of autumn? A cloud I had never seen, in an evening sky.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Jien
Sabishisa wa sono iro to shi mo nakarikeri maki tatsu yama no aki no yūgure
Loneliness is not, after all, a matter of this colour or that: a mountain of evergreens, an evening in autumn.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - The Monk Jakuren
Kokoro naki mi ni mo aware wa shirarekeri shigi tatsu sawa no aki no yūgure
Even to one who has put such things aside, the pity of it makes itself felt: a snipe rising from the marsh, an evening in autumn.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - The Monk Saigyo
Miwataseba hana mo momiji mo nakarikeri ura no tomaya no aki no yūgure
Looking out, I find neither blossom nor scarlet leaves: a rush-thatched hut on the shore, an evening in autumn.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Teika
Taete ya wa omoi ari tomo ikaga semu mugura no yado no aki no yūgure
Could anyone bear it? And what use are thoughts? A house overgrown with weeds, an evening in autumn.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Masatsune
Omou koto sashite sore to wa naki mono o aki no yūbe o kokoro ni zo tou
There is nothing I could point to and name as what troubles me; and still I put the autumn evening as a question to my own heart.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Kunaikyo
Akikaze no itari itaranu sode wa araji tada warekara no tsuyu no yūgure
There is no sleeve the autumn wind reaches and another it does not: this dew comes from ourselves alone, on an evening like this.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Kamo no Chomei
Obotsukana aki wa ikanaru yue no areba suzuro ni mono no kanashikaru ramu
I cannot make it out: what reason has autumn, that everything should turn sad for no cause at all?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - The Monk Saigyo
Sore nagara mukashi ni mo aranu akikaze ni itodo nagame o shizu no odamaki
The same autumn wind, and not what it was of old; and at it I gaze on and on, as the spindle winds and unwinds.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Princess Shokushi
