Is it to keep me from seeing which way the little fishing boats are rowing, this morning mist of the bay that rises with the waves?
Izayoi Nikki - Abutsu-ni
Tachihanare yo mo ukinami wa kake mo seji mukashi no hito no onaji yo naraba
I would never have left the capital, nor let the bitter waves of this world break over me, had the one who is gone been living still in my own age.
Izayoi Nikki - Abutsu-ni
Tabigoromo namida o soete Utsu no yama shigurenu hima mo sazo shigururamu
Your travelling robe, and your tears with it: on Mount Utsu, even in the hours when no shower fell, surely the rain was falling on you.
Yukurinaku akugareideshi izayoi no tsuki ya okurenu katami narubeki
That sixteenth-night moon, which drifted out so unlooked-for: is it not the one keepsake that has never once fallen behind you?
Meguriau sue o zo tanomu yukurinaku sora ni ukareshi izayoi no tsuki
I set my hopes on meeting again at last: this sixteenth-night moon, that drifted all unlooked-for out into the sky.
Izayoi Nikki - Abutsu-ni
Harubaru to omoi koso yare tabigoromo namida shigururu hodo ya ikani to
From all this distance my thoughts go out to you: what must it be like, that travelling robe of yours, rained on by your tears?
Omoiyare tsuyu mo shigure mo hitotsu nite yamaji wakekoshi sode no shizuku o
Think of them, then: dew and winter rain were all one thing, and these are the drops on my sleeves from forcing my way over the mountain roads.
You set out from the capital in the winter rain; is that travelling robe of yours colder still now, under the snow?
Izayoi Nikki - Kyōgoku Tamekane
Tabigoromo urakaze saete Kaminazuki shigururu kumo ni yuki zo furisou
The wind off the bay is cold on this travelling robe, and in the tenth month the snow comes down as well, out of the showering clouds.
My heart fails me; the sky I watch has darkened over, the whole width of heaven lies between us, and now it is turning to snow.
Would my sleeves have been wet in the ordinary way, if my only grievance were that no one told me the day you cut your travelling robe and went?
Kakikurashi yuki furu sora no nagame ni mo hodo wa kumoi no aware o zo shiru
The sky darkens over and the snow comes down; and gazing at it, I too know the sorrow of all that heaven set between us.
Kokoro kara nani uramuramu tabigoromo tatsu hi o dani mo shirazugao nite
Why complain, when it was your own doing? You wore the face of someone who did not even know the day I was to set out.
Izayoi Nikki - Abutsu-ni
Yomosugara namida mo fumi mo kakiaezu iso kosu kaze ni hitori okiite
All night I can neither wipe the tears away nor finish the letter, sitting up alone in the wind that comes over the rocks.
Idly cutting seaweed, idly burning salt: and at such pastimes how I long for you, the nun of the village I knew.
Izayoi Nikki - Abutsu-ni
Tamazusa o miru ni namida no kakaru kana iso kosu kaze wa kiku kokochi shite
Reading your letter, how the tears come; for I seem to hear the very wind that crosses the rocks where you are.
