When the colored leaves on the autumn hills have fallen away, will I long all the more to see the autumn?

The waves on the River of Heaven are not so very high, yet how hard it is to wait for the moment to cross, though these shallows lie so near.

So near are we that if we waved our sleeves we could see each other, yet there is no way to cross, for it is not yet that autumn night.

If we part after only a faint glimpse of each other, how helplessly I will long for you until the time we meet again.

I hear the waves astir at the landing on the River of Heaven; the one I wait for must be setting out by boat.

The fields of Ashiki, where maiden flowers bloom mingled with autumn bush clover: from this day on I will gaze on them for ten thousand ages.
Tamakushige ashiki no kawa o kyō mite wa yorozuyo made ni wasuraeme ya mo
Having seen the river of Ashiki today, could I ever forget it, even in ten thousand ages? Never.
Kusamakura tabi yuku hito mo yukifureba nioinubeku mo sakeru hagi kamo
How richly the bush clover blooms here; even a traveler passing by and brushing against it would surely be dyed with its color.
