Tsuki ni ikade mukashi no koto o katarasete kage ni soitsutsu tachi mo hanareji
Somehow I would have the moon tell me of the past, and stay close beside its light, never rising to leave.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ukiyo to shi omowade mo mi no suginikeru tsuki no kage ni mo nazusawaritsutsu
Without ever thinking it a sorrowful world, I have let my life slip by, all the while growing close to the light of the moon.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kumo ni tsukite ukare nomi yuku kokoro o ba yama ni kakete o tomen to zo omou
This heart that keeps drifting off after the clouds—I mean to hold it fast, even if I must hang it on the mountains.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Sutete nochi wa magireshi kata wa oboenu o kokoro nomi o ba yo ni arasekeru
Since renouncing the world I no longer recall the affairs that once distracted me, yet my heart alone I have let remain in the world.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Chiri tsukade yugameru michi o naoku nashite yukuyuku hito o yo ni tsukaebaya
Untouched by the dust, I would straighten the crooked roads and serve the world for all those who pass along them.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hitoshiman to omoi mo mienu yo ni areba sue ni sa koso wa ōnusa no sora
Since this is a world where not even the wish to be like others can be seen, surely the days ahead will be as uncertain as a sky of the great purification wand.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Fukaki yama wa kokemusu iwa o tatamiagete furinishi kata o osametaru kana
The deep mountains, piling up their moss-grown rocks layer on layer, have stored away within them the ages long past.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Furinikeru kokoro koso nao aware nare oyobanu mi ni mo yo o omowasuru
How moving is this heart grown old: even in one whose strength falls short, it still stirs thoughts for the world.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hakanashi na chiyo omoishi mukashi o mo yume no uchi nite suginikeru yo wa
How fleeting it is—this world, where even the old days I thought would last a thousand ages have passed by as in a dream.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Sasagani no ito ni tsuranuku tsuyu no tama o kakete kazareru yo ni koso arikere
This world is like dewdrops strung like jewels on a spider's thread and hung up as adornments.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Utsutsu o mo utsutsu to sara ni omoeneba yume o mo yume to nani ka omowan
Since I cannot think of waking life as truly real, how could I ever think of dreams as merely dreams?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Saranu koto mo atokata naki o wakite nado tsuyu o ada ni mo ii mo okiken
Since things other than dew also vanish without a trace, why was dew alone singled out and called fleeting?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tomoshibi no kakage chikara mo naku narite tomaru hikari o matsu waga mi kana
I no longer have the strength to trim the wick of the lamp, and I am one who only waits for its last remaining light to go out.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mizu hitaru ike ni uruou shitatari o inochi ni tanomu irokuzu ya tare
The fish that depend for their life on the drops trickling into a pond whose water has run dry—who are they?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Migiwa chikaku hikiyoseraruru ōami ni ikuse no mono no inochi komoreri
Within the great net being drawn in near the shore are held the lives of creatures from so many river shallows.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Uraura to shinanzuru na to omoitokeba kokoro no yagate sa zo to kotauru
When I come to understand that I shall die peacefully and serenely, my heart at once answers, "Yes, so it is."
Sankashu - Saigyō
