classic waka stream

My sleeves today are dried;
so of wretchedness,
the thousand kinds
will surely be forgotten.

Meaning
Today my sleeves, once wet with brine and tears, have dried; and so the countless kinds of wretchedness will surely be forgotten.
Commentary
This is Prince Kuramochi’s reply to the Bamboo Cutter’s poem: “Of Kure bamboo, through generations, the bamboo cutter— / though in fields and hills, / we saw not only such bitter turns.”

Now that he believes he has succeeded in bringing back the jeweled branch of Horai, the condition for marriage with Princess Kaguya, he means that all the hardships he has endured until now will be repaid.
