Commentary

Part Three: Agemaki

　Niou's poem, which closes the five. Kept from the house by his attendants, he had had to go by without stopping, and the poem carries his chagrin. From this incident Oigimi doubted his good faith, and out of fear for her sister's future she began to fall ill.

　In ki no moto, ko sounds as ko, child, pointing at the sisters. Fuki na sugushi so is a prohibition, do not blow past, and he puts into the wind the bitterness of having had to pass by himself. The wind in the pines is the standard sound of loneliness in a mountain village, and placed at the end of a brilliant sequence it announces the darkening that follows.
