the sky that I look upon
goes on darkening over

Commentary
Part Three: Agemaki

Naka no Kimi's reply. Against the winter rain of the capital she sets hail and deep hills, and so marks the distance between them without pressing it. The year closed while she went on waiting, and Oigimi's illness grew worse.

Arare, hail, gives a harsher mountain weather than his shigure. Kakikurasu is both the sky darkening and the eyes darkening with tears. She takes his "the same sky" and answers that hers is always clouded, so that the gap between capital and Uji is told through a difference of weather.
