Commentary

Part Three: Tenarai

　Since Ukifune would not answer, the nun replied to the Captain in her place. The girl has already been moved to a hut of grass where the world is renounced, she says, and her heart is not to be troubled: a mild way of turning the offer aside. For all that, the nun herself wished the match, and went on welcoming the Captain's visits and putting Ukifune out of countenance.

　Utsushi uete is to transplant a flower, said of Ukifune moved from Uji to Ono. Omoi midarenu is that her heart is not disturbed. "A hut of grass" is the poor dwelling of one who has left the world. She takes his maiden flower and answers that it is not a flower of the fields but of the hermitage, and so builds a reason for refusing.
