もろともにあはれと言はず人知れぬ
問はず語りを我のみやせん

Roma-ji: Morotomo ni aware to iwazu hito shirenu towazugatari o ware nomi ya sen
English Translation: Not together with you

I alone go on,
unknown to anyone, in
talk that no one asked to hear?
Meaning: Without our sighing together over how moving it is, must I alone carry on this talk that no one asked for, unknown to anyone?

Headnote: "Reply."
This is the third poem of the sequence on longing that has lasted for years, a reply to the preceding poem. Without the two sighing "aware" together, must she alone carry on an unasked-for confession unknown to anyone, she asks, answering the "omou kokoro" of his poem. According to the headnote, it is a reply to Minamoto no Takaakira's poem.
The author, "Mother of Major Counselor Toshikata," was a daughter of Fujiwara no Morosuke, Minister of the Right. She became the wife of Minamoto no Takaakira and bore Major Counselor Minamoto no Toshikata.
The second line of the main text reads "aware to iwazu," which does not match "aware to iwazu wa" in the kana reading line. The main text is followed here.

The first line, "morotomo ni," means "together with you."
The second line, "aware to iwazu," means "without saying 'aware' to each other," without sharing a deep feeling. Following the main text, the line falls one syllable short at six.
The third line, "hito shirenu," means "unknown to anyone" and modifies "towazugatari."
In the fourth line, "towazugatari" is speaking of one's own accord when no one has asked. Taking up "omou kokoro" from his poem, she calls a feeling not exchanged between two a one-sided telling.
In the last line, "ya" poses a question resolved by "sen": must I alone do so? "Morotomo ni" and "ware nomi" pair the first line with the last, answering that feeling is something to be spoken between two.
