我ならぬ人に心をつくば山
したに通はん道だにやなき

Roma-ji: Ware naranu hito ni kokoro o Tsukubayama shita ni kayowan michi dani ya naki
English Translation: On one not myself
you have spent your heart: Tsukuba,
at your mountain's foot,
is there not even a path
by which I might come in secret?
Meaning: You have spent your heart on someone other than me. Is there not even a path at the foot of Mount Tsukuba by which I might come to you in secret?
Commentary: Book Eleven Love Poems I 1014

Headnote: "Sent to a woman who had another man visiting her as well."
This is the fourth poem of the sequence on love sung through mountains. To a woman who has given her heart to another man, the poet asks whether there is not even a hidden path at the foot of Mount Tsukuba. According to the headnote, it was sent to a woman who had another man visiting her.
The author, "Ōnakatomi no Yoshinobu Ason," was a son of Ōnakatomi no Yorimoto, Vice-Minister of Divinities and chief priest of the Ise Shrine. He too became chief priest, and as one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber he took part in compiling the Gosen Wakashū and in reading the Man'yōshū. He is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals.

The first line, "ware naranu," means "one not myself."
The second line, "hito ni kokoro o," means "your heart, to another," showing that the woman has turned to someone else.
In the third line, "tsukuba" pivots between "tsukusu," to spend one's heart, and Mount Tsukuba. From the woman spending her heart, the poem turns to the scene of the mountain.
In the fourth line, "shita" pivots between the foot of the mountain and "in secret, hidden from others' eyes."
In the last line, "dani" means "at least," and "ya" poses a question resolved by "naki." Where Shigeyuki's preceding poem says Tsukuba's thickets are no hindrance, this one laments that with another man there, not even a path remains, and two contrasting loves stand on the same mountain. 1011, by Yoshitaka, was likewise composed on learning of another man visiting a woman, and both poems share the device of peak and foot.
