我が恋も今は色にや出でなまし
軒のしのぶももみぢしにけり

Roma-ji: Waga koi mo ima wa iro ni ya idenamashi noki no shinobu mo momijishinikeri
English Translation: Shall my love as well
now at last let its color
show for all to see?
The shinobu on the eaves
has already turned to red
Meaning: Shall I, too, let my love show its color at last? Even the shinobu fern on the eaves, whose name means hiding, has turned to autumn red.

Headnote: "Sent to a woman attached to a shinobu fern that had turned red."
This is the third poem of the sequence on hidden love that turns on whether feeling shows in one's color. Since even the shinobu fern, whose name means hiding, has turned red, the speaker wonders whether he too should let his love show. According to the headnote, it was sent to a woman attached to a shinobu fern that had taken on autumn color.
The author, "Hanazono Minister of the Left," is Minamoto no Arihito. A son of Prince Sukehito, himself a son of Emperor Go-Sanjō, he was adopted by Retired Emperor Shirakawa, later received the surname Minamoto as a commoner, and rose to Minister of the Left. He was called the Hanazono Minister of the Left from his mansion at Hanazono.

In the first line, "mo" implies "like the shinobu on the eaves."
In the second line, "ya" poses a question resolved by "mashi" in the third line. "Iro ni izu" means for a feeling to show outwardly.
In the third line, "namashi" expresses a hesitant resolve: shall I simply let it? The poem breaks here.
In the fourth line, "shinobu" pivots between the shinobu fern growing on the eaves and hiding one's love.
The last line, "momijishinikeri," means "has turned red," and makes this the reason to declare his love: even the grass named for hiding has shown its color. Where the two preceding poems resolve never to let the feeling show, this one wavers toward showing it, turning the same "color" in the opposite direction.
