空蝉の鳴く音やよそにもりの露
干しあへぬ袖を人の問ふまで

Roma-ji: Utsusemi no naku ne ya yoso ni mori no tsuyu hoshiaenu sode o hito no tou made
English Translation: Has my weeping, like
the cicada's cry, leaked out
to others? Dew of the grove
on my sleeve that will not dry,
till people come to ask
Meaning: Has my weeping, like the cicada's cry, leaked out for others to hear? My sleeve, wet as with the dew of the grove, will not dry, until people come asking why.
Commentary: Book Eleven Love Poems I 1031

Headnote: "On the sense of 'Summer Love' at a poetry contest held at his house."
This is the first of two poems of summer love. Has his weeping leaked out like a cicada's cry, he wonders, now that people ask about a sleeve that will not dry, like dew in the grove? According to the headnote, it was composed on the topic "Summer Love" at a poetry contest held at his own house.
The author, "Regent and Chancellor," is Kujō Yoshitsune. A son of the Regent Kujō Kanezane, he rose to Regent and Chancellor. He wrote the Kana Preface of the Shin Kokin Wakashū.

The first line, "utsusemi no," names the cicada, laying the speaker's weeping over its cry.
In the second line, "ya" poses a question: has my weeping leaked out for others to hear?
In the third line, "mori" pivots between "mori," leaking of sound, and "mori," the grove where cicadas cry, laying tears over the dew of the grove. The poem breaks here.
The fourth line, "hoshiaenu sode o," means "a sleeve that cannot be dried," a sleeve forever wet with tears.
The last line, "hito no tou made," means "until people come to ask," showing a hidden love that can no longer be concealed. Where the sequence before sang through autumn showers of love that never shows, this poem sings through summer cicadas and dew of a love revealed so far that others ask. The next poem, by Jakuren, is another Summer Love poem from the same contest, a love wrapping fireflies in the sleeve.
