Tsurakeredo uramin to hata omōezu nao yukusaki o tanomu kokoro ni - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

つらけれど恨みんとはた思ほえず
なほ行く先を頼む心に

Roma-ji: Tsurakeredo uramin to hata omōezu nao yukusaki o tanomu kokoro ni
English Translation: Cold though you may be,
still I cannot bring myself
to think of blame,
for my heart goes on, and still
puts its trust in what's to come
Meaning: Though you are cold to me, I cannot bring myself to resent you, for my heart still places its trust in what is yet to come.
Commentary: Book Eleven Love Poems I 1038

Headnote: "Written on something where she had been practicing her hand, when he went there in the days he was exchanging glances with and courting a lady who served Reizei-in while he was Crown Prince."
This is the first of two poems exchanged between Kentoku-kō and a lady-in-waiting. Though she is cold to him, he cannot resent her, for his heart still trusts in what is to come. According to the headnote, he wrote it on something at the place where she had been practicing her writing, in the days when he was courting her, a lady who served Reizei-in while he was Crown Prince.
The author, "Kentoku-kō," is Fujiwara no Koretada. The eldest son of Fujiwara no Morosuke, Minister of the Right, he rose to Regent and Chancellor. Kentoku-kō is the posthumous name given him after his death. His personal collection is the Ichijō Sesshō Gyoshū.
Reizei-in was a son of Emperor Murakami and later Emperor Reizei. His mother was Empress Anshi, Koretada's sister, so Koretada was his uncle.
The next poem is the lady's reply to this one.

The first line, "tsurakeredo," means "though you are cold to me."
In the second line, "hata" means "after all."
The third line, "omōezu," means "I cannot find it in me to think," and the poem breaks here.
The fourth line, "nao yukusaki o," means "still, what lies ahead."
The last line, "tanomu kokoro ni," means "for my heart trusts in it," giving through inversion the reason he cannot resent her. Where the sequence before sang of love hidden alone, from here comes an exchange of words with the beloved, and the reply in the next poem answers by taking up "tanomu."
