思ひあまりそなたの空を眺むれば
霞を分けて春雨ぞ降る

Roma-ji: Omoi amari sonata no sora o nagamureba kasumi o wakete harusame zo furu
English Translation: Overcome with love,
when I gaze upon the sky
where you are dwelling,
parting the spring haze in its path
the soft spring rain is falling.
Meaning: My love too great to hold, I gaze at the sky in the direction where you are, and through the parting spring haze the spring rain is falling.
Commentary: Book Twelve Love Poems II 1107

Headnote: "Sent to a woman on a rainy day."
This is the fourth poem of the sequence on "nagame." Overcome with love, the speaker gazes at the sky toward the beloved's home and sees spring rain falling through the haze. According to the headnote, it was sent to a woman on a day of rain.
The author, "Shunzei, Master of the Empress Dowager's Household," is Fujiwara no Shunzei. The son of Provisional Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Toshitada, he compiled the Senzaishū at the command of Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa. He was the father of Fujiwara no Teika.

The first line, "omoi amari," means "love too great for the heart to hold," a hypermetric line of six syllables.
The second line, "sonata no sora o," means "the sky where you are." Taking up "yūgure no sora" from the preceding poem, poems of gazing at the sky continue.
The third line, "nagamureba," means "when I gaze," the perfective form with "ba" marking a fixed condition. It is the fourth of the poems on "nagame" that begin with poem 1104 in this book.
The fourth line, "kasumi o wakete," means "parting the lingering haze."
The last line, "harusame zo furu," closes with the attributive "furu" in answer to the particle "zo." The spring rain falling from the sky where the beloved is lies over the speaker's overflowing heart, closing the poem as one sent to a woman on a rainy day.
