Omoedomo iwade tsukihi wa sugi no kado sasuga ni ikaga shinobihatsubeki - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

思へども言はで月日はすぎの門
さすがにいかが忍び果つべき

Roma-ji: Omoedomo iwade tsukihi wa sugi no kado sasuga ni ikaga shinobihatsubeki
English Translation: Though I love, unspoken
the months slip by like a gate
of cedar barred shut;
and yet how could I endure
in hiding to the very end?
Meaning: Though I love, the months have slipped by unspoken, as if behind a cedar gate barred shut; and yet, after all, how could I keep my love hidden to the very end?
Commentary: Book Twelve Love Poems II 1109

Headnote: "On the idea of 'Love That Longs to Be Spoken.'"
This is the second of two poems on a love in which the months go by without meeting and without speaking. Though the months have slipped by unspoken, the speaker says it is impossible to go on hiding as if behind a barred cedar gate. According to the headnote, it was composed on the topic "Love That Longs to Be Spoken."
The author is Fujiwara no Tadasada, a courtier of the early Kamakura period.

The first line, "omoedomo," means "though I love," with "domo" adversative.
The second line, "iwade tsukihi wa," means "the months, unspoken." It shares the construction of "awade tsukihi ya" in the preceding poem; where that poem spoke of months passing without meeting, this one speaks of months passing without a word.
In the third line, "sugi no kado," "sugi" holds both "sugi," the months passing, and the cedar of the "cedar gate." As with "sugi fukeru io" in the last line of the preceding poem, the two poems are bound by the pun on "passing" and "cedar."
In the fourth line, "sasuga ni ikaga," "sasuga" holds both "sasu," to bar the cedar gate, and "sasuga ni," and yet after all.
The last line, "shinobihatsubeki," means "could I hide it to the end? no, I could not," a rhetorical question ending in the attributive "beki" in answer to "ikaga." The topic "Love That Longs to Be Spoken" is rendered as a heart that cannot hide to the end.
