Ukimi o ba ware dani itou itoe tada so o dani onaji kokoro to omowan - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

憂き身をば我だに厭ふ厭へただ
そをだに同じ心と思はん

Roma-ji: Ukimi o ba ware dani itou itoe tada so o dani onaji kokoro to omowan
English Translation: This wretched self of mine
even I myself despise:
despise it, then, too;
in that, at least, I will think
our hearts are one and the same.
Meaning: Even I despise this wretched self of mine. Then you despise it too; in that at least I will think our hearts are one.
Commentary: Book Twelve Love Poems II 1143

Headnote: "Composed on the idea of 'One-Sided Love.'"
This is the first poem of a sequence in which one-sided love comes to dwell on one's own self and life. Since even the speaker despises this wretched self, let the beloved despise it too; in that at least their hearts will be one. According to the headnote, it was composed on the idea of "One-Sided Love."
The author, "Shunzei, Master of the Empress Dowager's Household," is Fujiwara no Shunzei. The son of Provisional Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Toshitada, he compiled the Senzaishū at the command of Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa. He was the father of Fujiwara no Teika.

The first line, "ukimi o ba," means "this wretched self."
The second line, "ware dani itou," means "even I myself despise," with "dani" marking "even I." The poem breaks after the second line.
The third line, "itoe tada," means "despise it, then, wholly," the poem breaking after the third line on the imperative. Repeating "itou" of the second line as "itoe" in the third, it binds self and beloved with the same word.
The fourth line, "so o dani onaji," means "in that, at least, the same," with "so" referring to the beloved's despising the speaker.
The last line, "kokoro to omowan," means "I will think our hearts one," with "n" expressing intention. Resolving to take even being despised as a sign of one heart shows the extremity of one-sided love, and it opens the sequence that leads to the end of the book.
