Asatsuyu no okitsuru sora mo omōezu kiekaeritsuru kokoromadoi ni - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

朝露のおきつる空も思ほえず
消えかへりつる心惑ひに

Roma-ji: Asatsuyu no okitsuru sora mo omōezu kiekaeritsuru kokoromadoi ni
English Translation: Like the morning dew—
of the sky when I rose and left
I remember nothing,
lost in the bewilderment
of a heart that faded away
Meaning: I remember nothing of the hour when I rose and parted from you, when the morning dew was settling—so lost was I in the bewilderment of a heart that had utterly faded away.
Commentary: Book Thirteen Love Poems III 1172

Headnote: "Reply."
This is the sixth poem of the sequence on parting at dawn, a reply to the preceding poem. She remembers nothing of the moment she rose and parted when the morning dew was settling, so bewildered was her heart that had faded away.
The author, "Consort Minamoto no Shūshi," was a daughter of the Senior Controller of the Right Minamoto no Tonau. She became a consort of Emperor Daigo, was called the Ōmi Consort, and was the mother of Minamoto no Takaakira and others.

The first line, "asatsuyu no," takes up exactly "asatsuyu no" from the third line of the preceding poem. As a reply, it answers by using his own words.
In the second line, "okitsuru sora mo," "oki" is, as in the preceding poem, a pivot word meaning both "dew settles" and "rising." "Sora" here means one's state of mind at that moment.
The third line, "omōezu," means "I do not remember," with a pause after the third line. It shows that her heart was so disordered that she did not know what happened when she rose and parted.
The fourth line, "kiekaeritsuru," means "utterly faded away." Taking up "kiemasarikeru" from the preceding poem, she answers that she faded away even more.
The last line, "kokoromadoi ni," means "in the bewilderment of my heart," giving in inverted order the reason for "omōezu" in the third line. To the emperor's "I fade away all the more," she replies that her own vanishing went far beyond that, showing the give and take of an exchange of poems.
