Omoiidete ima wa kenubeshi yomosugara okiukaritsuru kiku no ue no tsuyu - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

思ひ出でて今は消ぬべし夜もすがら
おき憂かりつる菊の上の露

Roma-ji: Omoiidete ima wa kenubeshi yomosugara okiukaritsuru kiku no ue no tsuyu
English Translation: Remembering you
I must fade away now;
all through the night long
loath to rise, loath to leave—
the dew upon the chrysanthemum
Meaning: Remembering you, I feel I must vanish now—like the dew upon the chrysanthemum, which all night long was loath to rise and leave.

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown."
This is the eighth poem of the sequence on parting at dawn. Remembering the beloved, he feels he must vanish now, like the dew upon the chrysanthemum that all night long was loath to rise and part. The headnote continues "Topic unknown" from the preceding poem, and the circumstances of composition are not recorded.
The author, "Kentoku-kō," is Fujiwara no Koretada. The eldest son of the Minister of the Right Fujiwara no Morosuke, he rose to Regent and Chancellor. Kentoku-kō is the posthumous name given to him.

The first line, "omoiidete," means "remembering," recalling the image of the beloved from whom he has parted.
The second line, "ima wa kenubeshi," means "I must vanish now," with a pause after the second line. It uses the same "ima wa" as "ima wa kiene to" in the preceding poem, taking up the flow of poems on a self fading away.
The third line, "yomosugara," means "all through the night."
In the fourth line, "okiukaritsuru," "oki" is a pivot word meaning both "dew settles" and "rising from bed," giving the sense "it was painful to rise and part."
The last line, "kiku no ue no tsuyu," ends on a noun, likening the self to dew on a chrysanthemum. "Kenubeshi" in the second line and "dew" in the last line stand in inverted relation, and the poem closes by entrusting a self vanishing like dew to the autumn image of the chrysanthemum.
