Akenuredo mada kinuginu ni nariyarade hito no sode o mo nurashitsuru kana - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

明けぬれどまだきぬぎぬになりやらで
人の袖をも濡らしつるかな

Roma-ji: Akenuredo mada kinuginu ni nariyarade hito no sode o mo nurashitsuru kana
English Translation: Though the night has dawned,
not yet has it come to the
parting of our robes;
even the sleeves of my love
I have wet with my own tears
Meaning: Though the night has broken, we have not yet come to the parting of the morning after—and already I have wet even your sleeves with my tears.
Commentary: Book Thirteen Love Poems III 1184

Headnote: "On the topic 'Love as one is about to leave at dawn,' in the reign of Nijō-in."
This is the eighth poem of the sequence on the feelings of the morning after. The night has broken, and before they have fully come to the parting of the morning after, she has wet even her lover's sleeves with tears. According to the headnote, it was composed in the reign of Emperor Nijō on the set topic of love as one is about to leave at dawn.
The author, "Sanuki of Nijō-in," was a daughter of Minamoto no Yorimasa and served Emperor Nijō. She later also served Gishūmon'in Ninshi, Empress to Emperor Go-Toba.

The first line, "akenuredo," means "though the night has broken." It takes up the scenes of dawn in the preceding poems.
The second line, "mada kinuginu ni," means "not yet to the parting of the morning after." "Kinuginu" is the parting on the morning after a night together, when each puts on their own robe; the line has eight syllables, one more than the norm.
The third line, "nariyarade," means "not yet having fully become so," showing a state in which the hour of parting has come but they cannot yet part.
The fourth line, "hito no sode o mo," means "even my lover's sleeves." "Mo" implies "not to mention my own." Where "only my sleeves are soaked" in the preceding poem referred to one's own sleeves, this poem turns to the lover's.
The last line, "nurashitsuru kana," means "I have wet them," closing with exclamation. Clinging to the lover in grief at parting, she has wet even his sleeves with her tears.
