Niwa ni ouru yūkagegusa no shitatsuyu ya kure o matsu ma no namida naruran - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

庭に生ふる夕かげ草の下露や
暮れを待つ間の涙なるらん

Roma-ji: Niwa ni ouru yūkagegusa no shitatsuyu ya kure o matsu ma no namida naruran
English Translation: The dew that lies low
on the evening-glow grasses
growing in my garden—
could it be the tears I shed
while I wait for dusk to come
Meaning: Could the dew beneath the evening-glow grasses growing in my garden be the tears I shed while waiting for dusk to come?
Commentary: Book Thirteen Love Poems III 1190

Headnote: "At a poetry contest held at the house of the Hosshōji Lay Priest, Former Regent and Chancellor."
This is the second poem of the sequence on waiting for the next evening after a meeting. The dew beneath the evening-glow grasses in the garden—could it be tears shed while waiting for dusk? According to the headnote, it was presented at a poetry contest held at the house of the Hosshōji Lay Priest, Former Regent and Chancellor Fujiwara no Tadamichi.
The author, "Fujiwara no Michitsune," lived in the late Heian period.

The first line, "niwa ni ouru," means "growing in the garden," and has six syllables, one more than the norm.
The second line, "yūkagegusa no," means "of the grasses lit by evening light." Naming a grass that bears the word "evening," it leads into the heart that waits for dusk.
The third line, "shitatsuyu ya," means "the dew beneath the leaves," with "ya" forming a kakari-musubi with "ran" in the last line. In place of the frost of the preceding poem, dew is sung.
The fourth line, "kure o matsu ma no," means "while waiting for dusk." It is almost the same line as "kure matsu hodo no" in the preceding poem, and the two poems are placed one after another.
The last line, "namida naruran," means "could it be tears?" The dew beneath the evening-glow grasses is seen as the tears of one who longs for evening. Where the preceding poem wished to show sleeves soaked with tears, this one finds those tears in the dew on the garden grass.
