Ariake wa omoide are ya yokogumo no tadayowaretsuru shinonome no sora - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

有明は思ひ出あれや横雲の
ただよはれつる東雲の空

Roma-ji: Ariake wa omoide are ya yokogumo no tadayowaretsuru shinonome no sora
English Translation: The dawn moon's hour—
does it hold a memory?
like the banks of cloud
my heart was set adrift
in the sky at break of day
Meaning: Is it because the hour of the dawn moon holds a memory? My heart was set adrift, like the banks of cloud trailing across the sky at daybreak.
Commentary: Book Thirteen Love Poems III 1193

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown."
This is the fifth poem of the sequence on waiting for the next evening after a meeting. Is it because the hour of the dawn moon holds a memory that his heart drifted like the banks of cloud in the sky at daybreak? The poem is placed as one in which, while waiting for evening, he recalls the parting at dawn. The headnote continues "Topic unknown" from the preceding poem, and the circumstances of composition are not recorded.
The author, "Saigyō Hōshi," was named Satō Norikiyo in lay life and served as a guard of the North Quarter under Retired Emperor Toba, but took holy orders in his youth and became a poet-monk. He traveled through many provinces and left a great number of poems.

The first line, "ariake wa," means "the hour of the dawn moon." Like 1185 of this book, it binds the dawn moon to the memory of parting.
The second line, "omoide are ya," means "is it because there is a memory?" with "ya" expressing a question and a pause after the second line.
The third line, "yokogumo no," means "of the banks of cloud trailing across the dawn sky," leading into "drifting" in the fourth line.
The fourth line, "tadayowaretsuru," means "was set adrift." The drifting clouds are overlaid with the unsettled heart of the morning of parting.
The last line, "shinonome no sora," ends on a noun. Closing with the memory of the dawn sky of parting, and taking up the fear of "a parting forever" in the preceding poem, it takes the form of one waiting for evening looking back on the morning's parting.
