Tada tanome tatoeba hito no itsuwari o kasanete koso wa mata mo uramime - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

ただ頼めたとへば人の偽りを
重ねてこそはまたも恨みめ

Roma-ji: Tada tanome tatoeba hito no itsuwari o kasanete koso wa mata mo uramime
English Translation: Simply trust in love—
even if the one you love
should pile lie on lie,
it will be time enough then
to resent it once again
Meaning: Just keep trusting. Even if the one you love should pile falsehood upon falsehood, it will be time enough then to resent it once again.
Commentary: Book Thirteen Love Poems III 1223

Headnote: "On the topic 'Love Pledged,' at the Hundred-Poem Contest held at the house of the Regent and Chancellor."
This is the fourth poem of the sequence on resenting a cold-hearted lover and enduring the pain. Just keep trusting; even if the beloved should pile falsehood on falsehood, there will be time enough then to resent it again—so the speaker tells his own heart. According to the headnote, it was composed on the topic "Love Pledged" at a hundred-poem contest held at the house of Fujiwara no Yoshitsune.
The author, "Former Archbishop Jien," is Jien. A son of the Regent Fujiwara no Tadamichi, he served four times as Tendai Abbot and wrote the history Gukanshō.
The hundred-poem contest of the headnote is the so-called Poetry Contest in Six Hundred Rounds.

The first line, "tada tanome," means "just trust," with a pause after the first line. In the form of a command to his own heart, he tries to shake off doubt.
The second line, "tatoeba hito no," means "even if the one you love."
The third line, "itsuwari o," means "falsehood." It is the same word as the first line of 1220 of this book, continuing the love that doubts the lover's faithfulness.
The fourth line, "kasanete koso wa," means "only when they are piled up." In 1216 of this book it was resentment that piled up; here it is supposed that falsehoods will pile up. The particle "koso" forms a kakari-musubi with the realis "me" in the last line.
The last line, "mata mo uramime," means "then resent it again." Where 1220 suspected falsehood and demanded an oath before the gods, this poem restrains itself, trusting until falsehoods pile up. It is a paired composition receiving the same "falsehood" with opposite attitudes.
