Itsu totemo aware to omou o nenuru yo no tsuki wa oboroke nakunaku zo mishi - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

いつとてもあはれと思ふを寝ぬる夜の
月はおぼろけなくなくぞ見し

Roma-ji: Itsu totemo aware to omou o nenuru yo no tsuki wa oboroke nakunaku zo mishi
English Translation: At any time at all
the moon moves me, and yet on
the night we lay together
hazy was the moon; no common grief,
weeping, weeping, I watched it.
Meaning: The moon always stirs my heart, yet on the night we lay together it was hazy with my tears, and with no ordinary feeling I watched it, weeping and weeping.
Commentary: Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 1258

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown."
This is the third poem of the sequence of love poems on the moon. The moon always moves me, the speaker says, but on the night we lay together it looked hazy through my tears, and I watched it weeping, with no ordinary feeling. As with the preceding poem, the headnote gives no topic, and the circumstances are not recorded.
The author, "Nakatsukasa," was a daughter born to Prince Atsuyoshi and Ise, a woman poet called Nakatsukasa after her father's office of Minister of Central Affairs. She is one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. The daughter's poem is placed directly after that of her mother, Ise, author of the preceding poem.

The first line, "itsu totemo," means "at any time at all."
The second line, "aware to omou o," means "the moon always stirs my heart, and yet"; "o" is concessive.
The third line, "nenuru yo no," means "of the night we lay together."
In the fourth line, "tsuki wa oboroke," "oboroke" plays on both "oboro," the hazy moon, and "oboroke," ordinary; running on into the "naku" that follows, it becomes "oboroke naku," "far from ordinary." Emperor Murakami's poem, 1256, also sets the same word beside the moon.
In the last line, "nakunaku zo mishi," "naku" is a pivot word serving both as the "naku" of "oboroke naku" and as "nakunaku," weeping and weeping. The attributive form "mishi" answers "zo." Piling word upon word, the poem sweeps on in one breath: through tears she watched the hazy moon with no ordinary feeling.
