忘るなよ今は心の変はるとも
慣れしその夜の有明の月

Roma-ji: Wasuru na yo ima wa kokoro no kawaru tomo nareshi sono yo no ariake no tsuki
English Translation: Do not forget, please,
though that heart may now have changed,
the night we grew close,
that very night, O you moon
lingering in the dawn sky.
Meaning: Do not forget, even if that person's heart has changed by now, the night we grew close, O moon lingering at dawn.
Commentary: Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 1279

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown."
This is the twenty-fourth poem of the sequence of love poems on the moon. Even if that person's heart has changed, the speaker says, do not forget the night we grew close, O dawn moon. As with the preceding poem, the headnote gives no topic, and the circumstances are not recorded.
The author, "Ietaka, Lord of the Court," is Fujiwara no Ietaka. A son of Fujiwara no Mitsutaka, he studied poetry under Fujiwara no Shunzei and became one of the compilers of the Shinkokinshū. He later reached the Junior Second Rank and was called the Mibu Second Rank.

The first line, "wasuru na yo," means "do not forget," and the poem breaks after it. It is the same first line as Tachibana no Tadamoto's poem, on which Yoshitsune's poem, 1272, draws: "Do not forget me, though we be as far apart as the clouds, until we meet again as the moon comes round in the sky."
The second line, "ima wa kokoro no," means "that person's heart, now."
The third line, "kawaru tomo," is a concessive supposition: "even if it has changed."
The fourth line, "nareshi sono yo no," means "of that night when we grew close." Like "sono yo no tsuki wa" in the fourth line of 1277, it points to the night of meeting.
The last line, "ariake no tsuki," ends on a noun as an address. Though the person's heart may change, the speaker begs the moon at least to remember that night, appealing to it through inversion. Where the preceding poem questioned the moon, this one asks it not to forget.
