言はざりき今来むまでの空の雲
月日隔てて物思へとは

Roma-ji: Iwazariki ima komu made no sora no kumo tsukihi hedatete mono omoe to wa
English Translation: You never told me
that till you came, "soon," as said,
like clouds in the sky
parting sun and moon, I'd spend
months and days in brooding love.
Meaning: You never said that until you came "soon," I should spend the months and days apart from you like clouds in the sky that hide the moon and sun, brooding over love.
Commentary: Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 1293

Headnote: "When presenting a hundred-poem sequence."
This is the third poem of the sequence on love being forgotten. You never told me, the speaker says, that until you came "soon" I should brood through months and days apart, like the clouds in the sky. According to the headnote, it was composed when presenting a hundred-poem sequence.
The author, "the Regent and Grand Minister," is Fujiwara no Yoshitsune. A son of the Chancellor Kujō Kanezane, he rose to regent and grand minister and was called the Go-Kyōgoku Regent. He wrote the Japanese preface to the Shinkokinshū.

The first line, "iwazariki," means "you never said," and the poem breaks after it. The past-tense "ki" stresses that this was never said when the promise was made.
The second line, "ima komu made no," means "until the time you said you would come soon." Like 1276, it uses the promise "ima komu," familiar since Sosei's poem.
The third line, "sora no kumo," takes up the clouds on the peak from the preceding poem and presents the clouds of the sky as what separates the two.
In the fourth line, "tsukihi hedatete," "tsukihi," months and days, through its link with the sky suggests the moon and sun. As clouds come between moon and sun, long months and days come between the lovers.
The last line, "mono omoe to wa," means "that I should brood over love." Running back in inverted order to "iwazariki" in the first line, it shows resentment at being forced into months of brooding behind the words "I'll come soon."
