- Even without this, my beloved must be minded to reproach me, and now the autumn wind blows upon the hem of her robe, turning it to show its lining.

Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 1305
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "When a contest of hundred-poem sequences was held at my house."
This is the second poem of the sequence on waiting for a lover, sung through the wind. The autumn wind blows on the hem of my beloved's robe, the speaker says, turning it over, when she is minded to reproach me even without it. Continuing from the preceding poem, it was submitted to the contest of hundred-poem sequences held at the house of Fujiwara no Yoshitsune.
The author, "Ariie, Lord of the Court," is Fujiwara no Ariie. A son of Fujiwara no Shigeie, he was one of the compilers of the Shinkokinshū. "Lord of the Court" is an honorific added to the names of those of the fifth rank and above.
The first line, "sarade dani," means "even without this."
In the second line, "uramimu to omou," "urami" is a pivot word meaning both "reproach" and "showing the lining" of a robe.
The third line, "wagimoko ga," means "my dear beloved's." From a man's standpoint, it imagines the reproach of the woman he keeps waiting.
The fourth line, "koromo no suso ni," means "on the hem of her robe," showing the lining of the hem turned up by the autumn wind.
The last line, "akikaze zo fuku," closes in the attributive "fuku" in answer to "zo." Where the preceding poem lamented the pine wind from the side of the one who waits, here, from the side of the man who keeps her waiting, he sees her mounting reproach in the robe turned over by the autumn wind.
