うちはへていやは寝らるる宮城野の
小萩が下葉色に出でしより

Roma-ji: Uchihaete i ya wa neraruru Miyagino no kohagi ga shitaba iro ni ideshi yori
English Translation: On and on the nights—
how could I ever find sleep?
On Miyagi Moor,
the lower leaves of bush clover
since they first showed their color
Meaning: How could I sleep, night after night, ever since my hidden feelings showed, like the lower leaves of the bush clover on Miyagi Moor taking on color?
Commentary: Book Fifteen Love Poems V 1346

Headnote: "Sent to Fujiwara no Korenari."
This is the eleventh poem of the dew sequence and forms an exchange with the next poem. The word dew does not appear in this poem itself, but the coloring of the lower bush-clover leaves leads to the dew of the next. The speaker pleads that there has been no sleep since hidden feelings showed, as the lower leaves of bush clover on Miyagi Moor take on color. According to the headnote, it was sent to Fujiwara no Korenari.
The author, "Anonymous," indicates a poet whose name has not come down.
Miyagi Moor is a poetic site in Mutsu Province, in the eastern part of present-day Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Famous for its bush clover, it has been sung together with dew and deer.

The first line, "uchihaete," means "on and on without pause."
In the second line, "i ya wa neraruru," "i" means sleep and "ya wa" is a rhetorical particle: "could I sleep? No, I could not." The closing "ruru" is attributive. The poem breaks after the second line.
The third line, "Miyagino no," names the poetic site famed for bush clover.
The fourth line, "kohagi ga shitaba," refers to the lower leaves of the bush clover. These color early, and feelings kept low in the heart are overlaid on them.
The last line, "iro ni ideshi yori," means "since, like the lower leaves coloring, my hidden feelings showed." Inverted from the second line, it gives the reason for sleeplessness afterward.
