Omoiyaru yoso no murakumo shigure tsutsu Adachi no hara ni momiji shinuran - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

思ひやるよその村雲しぐれつつ
安達の原に紅葉しぬらん

Roma-ji: Omoiyaru yoso no murakumo shigure tsutsu Adachi no hara ni momiji shinuran
English Translation: As I think of you,
far off the gathering clouds
keep showering rain;
have the trees on Adachi Moor
by now all turned autumn red?
Meaning: As I think of you far away, the gathering clouds there keep sending down autumn showers; by now the trees on Adachi Moor must have turned red.
Commentary: Book Fifteen Love Poems V 1351

Headnote: "Sent around the ninth month to a woman living at Adachi in Mutsu."
This is the first poem of the sequence on the changing colors of autumn. Imagining distant clouds sending down showers and the leaves turning on Adachi Moor, the speaker also worries over a change in the woman's heart. According to the headnote, it was sent around the ninth month to a woman living at Adachi in Mutsu.
The author, "Shigeyuki," was a son of Minamoto no Kanenobu of the Seiwa Genji, a poet of the Minamoto clan. One of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets, he held a series of provincial posts and in his last years went down to Mutsu.
Adachi Moor is a poetic site in Mutsu Province, around present-day Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Prefecture. In a poem by Taira no Kanemori in the Shūishū, it is sung together with Kurozuka, said to hide a demon.

The first line, "omoiyaru," means "thinking of a distant place."
The second line, "yoso no murakumo," refers to gathered clouds in a distant sky, apart from where the speaker is.
The third line, "shigure tsutsu," means "while showers keep falling." Showers were held to dye the leaves, leading into the autumn colors of the fourth and last lines.
The fourth line, "Adachi no hara ni," names the poetic site in Mutsu where the woman lives.
In the last line, "momiji shinuran," "ran" is the present conjecture for what is not before one's eyes. From the dewdrop tears and river of the preceding poems, the book turns here to the changing colors of autumn, continuing into the "autumn that changes color" of the next poem.
