あはれなりうたた寝にのみ見し夢の
長き思ひにむすぼほれなん

Roma-ji: Aware nari utatane ni nomi mishi yume no nagaki omoi ni musubohorenan
English Translation: How sad it is now!
The dream I saw only once
in a fitful doze
will knot itself, I fear,
into a longing without end
Meaning: How sad it is: the dream I saw only in a fitful doze will, I fear, knot itself into a longing without end.
Commentary: Book Fifteen Love Poems V 1389

Headnote: "Composed for the Poetry Contest in Fifteen Hundred Rounds."
This is the tenth poem of the dream sequence. The speaker fears that a dream seen only in a brief doze will knot itself into a long, unending longing. According to the headnote, it was presented at the Poetry Contest in Fifteen Hundred Rounds.
The author, "Master of the Empress Dowager's Household Shunzei," is Fujiwara no Shunzei. A son of Provisional Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Toshitada, he compiled the Senzaishū and was the father of Fujiwara no Teika. The Master of the Empress Dowager's Household headed the office serving the empress dowager.
The Poetry Contest in Fifteen Hundred Rounds was the largest poetry contest ever held: in Kennin 1 (1201) Retired Emperor Go-Toba had thirty poets compose hundred-poem sequences and matched them in fifteen hundred rounds.

The first line, "aware nari," means "how sad it is," and the poem breaks after it. The feeling is set down first and its reason given below.
The second line, "utatane ni nomi," means "only in a doze." Like the "dream in a doze" of 1380, it refers to a dream seen while nodding off.
The third line, "mishi yume no," means "the dream I saw."
The fourth line, "nagaki omoi ni," means "into a long-lasting longing." The brevity of the doze is set against the length of the longing.
In the last line, "musubohorenan," "musubohoru" means a heart knotted and unable to clear, and since one also "ties" a dream, it is associated with dreams. It is the same word as "musubohore tsutsu," the last line of 1348: what there was the beading of dewdrop tears is here used of a dream taking shape.
