- So many days have passed without our meeting, as the long rains fall, that I gaze into the far-off sky, lost in brooding.

Book Fifteen Love Poems V 1413
Headnote: "Topic unknown."
This is the third poem of the sequence on sky and clouds. With many days passing without meeting, in the season of long rains, the speaker gazes into the distant sky, lost in brooding. The headnote gives no topic, and the circumstances of composition are not recorded.
The author, "Poem by Emperor Kōkō," is Emperor Kōkō, a son of Emperor Ninmyō. He took the throne at fifty-five as the fifty-eighth sovereign and reigned a little over three years.
The first line, "awazu shite," means "without meeting."
In the second line, "furu korohoi no," "furu" is a pivot word joining time "passing" and rain "falling." "Korohoi" means a period of time.
The third line, "amata areba," means "since there are many." It refers to the many days passed without meeting.
The fourth line, "harukeki sora ni," means "into the distant sky." It takes up the sky sung in the exchange of the two preceding poems.
In the last line, "nagame o zo suru," "nagame" is a pivot word joining "gazing" lost in thought and "long rain." It closes the kakari-musubi of "zo" with the attributive "suru." Through the two pivot words "furu" and "nagame," the brooding of days without meeting is overlaid on a sky of long rain.
