大淀のまつはつらくもあらなくに
うらみてのみも帰る波かな

Roma-ji: Ōyodo no matsu wa tsuraku mo aranaku ni uramite nomi mo kaeru nami kana
English Translation: The pine of Ōyodo
waiting here is not unkind,
and yet all the same
you only view the bay and, bitter,
turn back like the waves
Meaning: The pine at Ōyodo, waiting here, is not cold to you, yet like the waves you only look upon the bay and go back resentful.

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown."
This is the first poem of the sequence on bays and waves. She who waits like the pine of Ōyodo is not cold, yet the beloved, like the waves that only look upon the bay, turns back resentful. The headnote gives no topic, and the circumstances of composition are not recorded.
The author, "Anonymous," indicates a poet whose name has not come down.
Ōyodo is a poetic site in Ise Province, present-day Meiwa, Taki District, Mie Prefecture. This poem appears in Episode 72 of The Tales of Ise, where a woman of Ise composes it for a man leaving for the next province without having met her.

The first line, "Ōyodo no," names the poetic site on the shore of Ise.
In the second line, "matsu wa tsuraku mo," "matsu" is a pivot word joining "matsu" (pine) on the shore and "matsu" (waiting).
The third line, "aranaku ni," means "though it is not." The poem breaks after the third line. She pleads that she who waits is not cold.
In the fourth line, "uramite nomi mo," "urami" is a pivot word joining "urami" (viewing the bay) and "urami" (resentment): "only looking at the bay, only resenting."
The last line, "kaeru nami kana," closes with the exclamatory "kana": "the waves that turn back." The beloved going away is overlaid on waves that come in and go out. From the fields of the preceding poems, the scene moves here to bay and waves, and the book begins to close with seaside poems.
