独り寝る宿のとこなつ朝な朝な
涙の露に濡れぬ日ぞなき

Roma-ji: Hitori nuru yado no tokonatsu asana asana namida no tsuyu ni nurenu hi zo naki
English Translation: At the house where I
sleep alone, the everlasting pinks
morning after morning
never have a day they are not
wet with dewdrops of my tears.
Meaning: At the house where I sleep alone, the pinks of everlasting summer—and my lonely bed—are never a single morning unwet by the dew of my tears.

Headnote: "Topic unknown."
This is the eleventh poem of the sequence on summer. The pinks of the house where the poet sleeps alone, and his bed as well, are never a morning unwet by the dew of tears. The headnote reads "topic unknown," and records nothing of the circumstances of composition.
The author, "the Poem of Retired Emperor Kazan," is Emperor Kazan. A son of Emperor Reizei, he took the tonsure and abdicated after about two years on the throne, and thereafter traveled through the provinces in religious practice as a cloistered emperor.

The first line, "hitori nuru," refers to sleeping alone. It shows the loneliness of having no one to share the bed.
In the second line, "yado no tokonatsu," "tokonatsu" plays on "tokonatsu," another name for the pink, and "toko," a bed. The flower in the garden and the bed where he sleeps alone are laid together in one word.
The third line, "asana asana," means "morning after morning." Repeating the word, it shows a grief that continues day after day.
The fourth line, "namida no tsuyu ni," likens tears to dew. It overlays the dew on the pinks with the tears that wet the bed.
The last line, "nurenu hi zo naki," closes the kakari-musubi of the particle "zo" with the attributive form "naki." Following the early summer rains and tears of the two preceding poems, it sets the dew of tears on the summer pinks, linking to the next poem on the pink.
