Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1505
Headnote: "When someone visited me while I was living in seclusion in a mountain village."
This is the seventh poem of the sequence on the moon. Thinking no one would remember him, the poet says, he went alone into the storm-swept mountains, like the dawn moon setting behind the mountain rim. According to the headnote, it was composed when someone visited him while he was living in seclusion in a mountain village.
The author, "Hōin Jōken," was the son of Fujiwara no Michinori. He took the tonsure and rose to the rank of hōin.
The first line, "omoiizuru," means "who would remember me."
In the second line, "hito mo arashi no," "arashi" plays on "araji," "there would be none," and "arashi," a storm. It overlays his feeling that no one would visit him with the storm blowing on the mountain.
The third line, "yama no ha ni," refers to the mountain ridge where the moon sets. Following "yama no ha" in the preceding poem, it sings of the moon entering behind the mountain rim.
The fourth line, "hitori zo irishi," closes the kakari-musubi of the particle "zo" with "shi," the attributive form of the past "ki." It overlays his entering the mountains alone with the moon going behind the mountain rim.
The last line, "ariake no tsuki," ends on a noun. Likening himself to the moon remaining in the dawn sky, it implies his gratitude to the one who came to visit after all.
