都にも人や待つらん石山の
峰に残れる秋の夜の月

Roma-ji: Miyako ni mo hito ya matsuran Ishiyama no mine ni nokoreru aki no yo no tsuki
English Translation: In the capital,
are they waiting for it too?
On Ishiyama's
peak the moon still lingers,
the moon of an autumn night.
Meaning: In the capital, too, are people waiting for it—the autumn night's moon that still lingers on the peak of Ishiyama?
Commentary: Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1514

Headnote: "Composed on seeing the moon when I made a pilgrimage to Ishiyama."
This is the first poem of the sequence thinking of others through the moon. Watching the autumn moon lingering on the peak of Ishiyama, the poet wonders whether people in the capital are also waiting for it. According to the headnote, it was composed on seeing the moon during a pilgrimage to Ishiyamadera.
The author, "Fujiwara no Nagatō," was the son of Fujiwara no Tomoyasu. A poet who served Retired Emperor Kazan, he was the younger brother of the author of the Kagerō Diary.
Ishiyama refers to Ishiyamadera in Ōmi. Pilgrimages to this sacred site of Kannon were popular, and it was also known as a place for moon viewing overlooking the Seta River.

The first line, "miyako ni mo," presents the capital in contrast with Ishiyama, where the poet is.
The second line, "hito ya matsuran," closes the kakari-musubi of the particle "ya" with the attributive form "ran." He thinks of the people of the capital, and the poem breaks after the second line.
The third line, "Ishiyama no," presents the mountain of Ishiyamadera, where he has made his pilgrimage.
The fourth line, "mine ni nokoreru," means "remaining on the peak," with "ru" as the auxiliary of continuation. It shows the moon still hanging on the peak though the night is late.
The last line, "aki no yo no tsuki," ends on a noun. Whereas the preceding sequence recalled the palace moon, this poem shifts to thinking of people in the capital from the moon seen on a journey, and poems thinking of others through the moon follow.
