Itazura ni nete wa akasedo morotomo ni kimi ga konu yo no tsuki wa mizariki - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

いたづらに寝ては明かせどもろともに
君が来ぬ夜の月は見ざりき

Roma-ji: Itazura ni nete wa akasedo morotomo ni kimi ga konu yo no tsuki wa mizariki
English Translation: Though in empty sleep
I have spent the nights till dawn,
on nights you did not
come to share it here with me,
I did not look at the moon.
Meaning: Though I have passed the nights in idle sleep until dawn, on the nights you did not come, I never looked at the moon we might have watched together.
Commentary: Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1516

Headnote: "When, on a night the moon was bright, someone with whom I was on intimate terms asked whether I had been looking at the moon lately."
This is the third poem of the sequence thinking of others through the moon. Though he has spent the nights in idle sleep, the poet says, on nights when his friend did not come he never looked at the moon they might have watched together. According to the headnote, it was composed in reply when, on a bright moonlit night, an intimate friend asked whether he had been looking at the moon lately.
The author, "Minamoto no Michinari," was a poet of the mid-Heian period. He served as Governor of Chikuzen, among other posts.

The first line, "itazura ni," means "in vain" or "to no purpose."
The second line, "nete wa akasedo," uses the concessive "do," meaning "though I sleep and pass the night till dawn."
The third line, "morotomo ni," means "together," modifying the viewing of the moon in the last lines.
The fourth line, "kimi ga konu yo no," means "on nights when you do not come." It takes up the question in the headnote, "have you been looking at the moon lately?"
The last line, "tsuki wa mizariki," declares with the past "ki," "I did not look at the moon." Whereas the preceding poem sought the reason for the moon's appearance in the place, this poem makes looking at the moon depend on whether there is someone to watch it with.
