Ariake no tsuki no yukue o nagamete zo nodera no kane wa kiku bekarikeru - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

有明の月の行方をながめてぞ
野寺の鐘は聞くべかりける

Roma-ji: Ariake no tsuki no yukue o nagamete zo nodera no kane wa kiku bekarikeru
English Translation: It is while gazing
at where the moon lingering at dawn
goes upon its way
that the bell of the field temple
ought to be heard ringing.
Meaning: It is while gazing after the dawn moon as it goes on its way that one should listen to the bell of the temple in the fields.
Commentary: Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1521

Headnote: "When the Regent and Chancellor, while he was Major Captain, had fifty poems on the moon composed."
This is the first poem of the sequence on the moon lingering at dawn. The poet says the bell of the temple in the fields should be heard while gazing after the dawn moon as it sets. According to the headnote, it was composed when Fujiwara no Yoshitsune, while Major Captain of the Palace Guards, had fifty poems on the moon composed.
The author, "Former Archbishop Jien," is Jien. The son of Fujiwara no Tadamichi and younger brother of Kujō Kanezane, he served four times as head of the Tendai school and wrote the historical treatise Gukanshō. No author's name is given in the text; the poem follows the author of the preceding poem.
The "Regent and Chancellor" of the headnote is Fujiwara no Yoshitsune. He was Jien's nephew.

The first line, "ariake no," presents the moon remaining in the dawn sky. From here, poems on the dawn moon follow.
The second line, "tsuki no yukue o," refers to where the moon goes as it sets.
The third line, "nagamete zo," means "while gazing," and the particle "zo" is closed by "keru" in the last line.
The fourth line, "nodera no kane wa," refers to the bell rung at daybreak at a temple in the fields. It pairs the scene of the setting moon with the sound of the bell.
The last line, "kiku bekarikeru," closes the kakari-musubi of the particle "zo" with the attributive form "keru." It sings of realizing now how hearing the dawn bell while watching the moon sink westward deepens the sense of impermanence.
