Mi no usa o tsuki ya aranu to nagamureba mukashi nagara no kage zo morikuru - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

身の憂さを月やあらぬとながむれば
昔ながらの影ぞ漏り来る

Roma-ji: Mi no usa o tsuki ya aranu to nagamureba mukashi nagara no kage zo morikuru
English Translation: Through my own sorrow,
as I gaze, asking, 'Is this
not the moon of old?'
just as it was long ago,
its light comes seeping in.
Meaning: When, in my sorrow, I gaze at the moon, asking, "Is this not the moon of old?"—its light seeps in just as it did long ago.

Headnote: "For the Poetry Contest in Fifteen Hundred Rounds."
This is the twelfth poem of the sequence reflecting on oneself through the moon. As she gazes in her sorrow, wondering whether this is not the moon of old, the light seeps in just as it did long ago. According to the headnote, it was presented at the Poetry Contest in Fifteen Hundred Rounds.
The author, "Nijō-in no Sanuki," was the daughter of Minamoto no Yorimasa. She served Emperor Nijō and later Gishūmon'in.
The second line draws on Ariwara no Narihira's poem in the Kokin Wakashū: "Tsuki ya aranu / haru ya mukashi no / haru naranu / waga mi hitotsu wa / moto no mi ni shite" ("Is this not the moon? Is this spring not the spring of old? I alone remain the self I was").

The first line, "mi no usa o," means "the sorrow of my lot."
The second line, "tsuki ya aranu to," means "is this not the moon of old?", using Narihira's first line, "tsuki ya aranu," as it is.
The third line, "nagamureba," adds "ba" to the perfective form to state a fixed condition: "as I gaze."
The fourth line, "mukashi nagara no," means "just as of old." The moon that Narihira lamented as changed is here said to be unchanged from long ago.
The last line, "kage zo morikuru," closes the kakari-musubi of the particle "zo" with the attributive form "kuru." What has changed is not the moon but the sorrow of her lot, and the moonlight, the same as of old, only sets off how much she herself has changed.
