Omoiyare nani o shinobu to nakeredomo miyako oboyuru ariake no tsuki - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

思ひやれ何をしのぶとなけれども
都おぼゆる有明の月

Roma-ji: Omoiyare nani o shinobu to nakeredomo miyako oboyuru ariake no tsuki
English Translation: Think of how I feel—
though there is nothing I miss
that I could name,
the moon lingering at dawn
brings the capital to mind.
Meaning: Imagine how I feel—though there is nothing in particular I long for, the moon lingering at dawn brings the capital to mind.
Commentary: Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1545

Headnote: "Sent to Princess Shokushi from a mountain village at the time of the dawn moon in the ninth month."
This is the second poem of the sequence on the moon of mountain village and capital. Though there is nothing in particular he longs for, the poet says, the dawn moon brings the capital to mind, and he asks her to imagine his feelings. According to the headnote, it was sent from a mountain village to Princess Shokushi at the time of the dawn moon in the ninth month.
The author, "Prince Koreaki," was a son of Emperor Takakura. He was an elder brother of Retired Emperor Go-Toba.
Princess Shokushi's reply to this poem is placed as the next poem.

The first line, "omoiyare," is imperative, meaning "imagine," and the poem breaks after the first line.
The second line, "nani o shinobu to," means "though it is not that I long for anything."
The third line, "nakeredomo," means "though there is not," leading concessively into the last lines.
The fourth line, "miyako oboyuru," means "the capital comes unbidden to mind." In reverse of the preceding poem, which thought of the mountain village from the capital, here he thinks of the capital from a mountain village.
The last line, "ariake no tsuki," ends on a noun. Entrusting his thoughts of the capital to the dawn moon of the ninth month, he sends the poem to Princess Shokushi, who must be looking at the same moon.
