Kaze soyogu shino no ozasa no kari no yo o omou nezame ni tsuyu zo koboruru - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

風そよぐ篠の小笹のかりの世を
思ふ寝覚めに露ぞこぼるる

Roma-ji: Kaze soyogu shino no ozasa no kari no yo o omou nezame ni tsuyu zo koboruru
English Translation: Like the bamboo grass
rustling in the wind, cut down,
this world lent to me—
as I wake and think of it,
the dewdrops spill and fall.
Meaning: As I wake in the night and think of this borrowed world, fleeting as bamboo grass cut down while it rustles in the wind, my tears spill like dew.
Commentary: Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1563

Headnote: "Composed on the spirit of 'Personal Grievance,' when I had people compose fifty-poem sequences."
This is the fourth poem of the sequence expressing personal feelings through the things of autumn. Waking at night and thinking of this transient world—"kari," like the cutting of bamboo grass rustling in the wind—the poet sheds tears like dew. According to the headnote, it was composed on the topic "Personal Grievance" when the poet had people compose fifty-poem sequences.
The author, "Imperial Prince Shukaku," was a son of Emperor Go-Shirakawa. He entered Ninnaji, took the tonsure, and became its abbot.

The first line, "kaze soyogu," means "the wind rustles."
The second line, "shino no ozasa no," refers to slender bamboo and small bamboo grass. The first and second lines form a preface leading to "kari" in the third line.
In the third line, "kari no yo o," "kari" plays on "kari," cutting the grass, and "kari," temporary. Since the joint of a bamboo is called "yo," "yo," world, also becomes an associated word of bamboo grass.
The fourth line, "omou nezame ni," means "when I wake in the night, thinking of it."
The last line, "tsuyu zo koboruru," closes the kakari-musubi of the particle "zo" with the attributive form "koboruru." Overlaying dew on the bamboo grass with tears, it moves the sorrow of autumn in the mountains in the preceding poem to tears shed over a transient world.
