Akikaze no seki fukikoyuru tabigoto ni koe uchisouru suma no uranami - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

秋風の関吹き越ゆるたびごとに
声うち添ふる須磨の浦波

Roma-ji: Akikaze no seki fukikoyuru tabigoto ni koe uchisouru suma no uranami
English Translation: Each time the autumn wind
blows across the barrier
and passes over,
adding their voices to it—
the waves of Suma Bay.
Meaning: Each time the autumn wind blows over the barrier, the waves of Suma Bay add their voices to its sound.
Commentary: Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1599

Headnote: "A folding-screen poem from the Tenryaku reign."
This is the second poem of the sequence on Suma. Each time the autumn wind blows over the Suma Barrier, the waves of Suma Bay sound as though adding their voice. According to the headnote, it was composed to accompany a folding-screen painting in the Tenryaku era of Emperor Murakami.
The author, "Mibu no Tadami," was a son of Mibu no Tadamine. One of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals, he is known for competing with Taira no Kanemori at the Tentoku Palace Poetry Contest.
Folding-screen poems were composed to match the pictures painted on screens, then written on paper squares and pasted onto them.
In the "Suma" chapter of The Tale of Genji, autumn at Suma is described with the phrase "the bay waves of which Middle Counselor Yukihira said, 'blowing over the barrier.'"

The first line, "akikaze no," means "the autumn wind," with "no" marking the subject.
The second line, "seki fukikoyuru," means "blowing over the barrier" of Suma. After the calm spring morning of the preceding poem, it turns to Suma swept by the autumn wind.
The third line, "tabigoto ni," means "each time," showing the sound repeated whenever the wind blows over.
The fourth line, "koe uchisouru," means "adding its voice to the sound of the wind." The sound of the bay waves is likened to a voice, and wind and waves overlap.
The last line, "suma no uranami," ends in a noun, placing at the close the bay waves that answer the autumn wind. It shares the words "Suma no ura" with the first line of the preceding poem, "Suma no ura no."
