Sumiyoshi no matsu wa matsu tomo omōede kimi ga chitose no kage zo koishiki - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

住吉の松はまつとも思ほえで
君が千歳のかげぞ恋しき

Roma-ji: Sumiyoshi no matsu wa matsu tomo omōede kimi ga chitose no kage zo koishiki
English Translation: Sumiyoshi's pines—
that they wait for me, the pines,
I cannot believe;
it is your thousand years' shade
that I long for, my lord.
Meaning: I cannot think the pines of Sumiyoshi are waiting for me; it is the shelter of your thousand-year reign that I long for.

Headnote: "In reply."
This is the third poem of the sequence on the pines of the bays and the reply to the preceding poem. She cannot think the pines of Sumiyoshi wait for her; it is the shelter of the emperor, enduring a thousand years, that she longs for.
The author, "Daini no Sanmi," is Fujiwara no Kenshi. A daughter of Murasaki Shikibu, she served as wet nurse to Emperor Go-Reizei. She became the wife of Takashina no Nariakira, Senior Assistant Governor-General of Dazaifu, and was raised to the Junior Third Rank.

The first line, "Sumiyoshi no," takes up "sumiyoshi no" of the preceding poem and turns the talk to the pines of Sumiyoshi.
The second line, "matsu wa matsu tomo," pivots on "matsu," the pine of Sumiyoshi and "to wait." It answers the first line of the preceding poem, "matsu hito wa," by replacing the waiting people with the pines of Sumiyoshi.
The third line, "omōede," means "without thinking so." She answers by denying the "kokoro yuku tomo" of the preceding poem: no one at home is waiting for her.
The fourth line, "kimi ga chitose no," means "of my lord, enduring a thousand years." Drawing on the pine, said to live a thousand years, it wishes the emperor long life.
The last line, "kage zo koishiki," pivots on "kage," the shade of the pine and the emperor's grace. The particle "zo" is closed by the attributive form "koishiki," and the reply ends by showing her longing for the palace.
