Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1610
Headnote: "A seashore poem, from the hundred-poem sequence I presented."
This is the second poem of the sequence on bays of the provinces. Perhaps because the offshore wind has turned cold with night, the fisherfolk's salt-weed fires at Tago Bay seem to burn higher. According to the headnote, it was a poem on the seashore from a hundred-poem sequence she presented.
The author, "Echizen," was a lady-in-waiting poet of the early Kamakura period who served Retired Emperor Go-Toba.
Tago Bay lies on the coast of Suruga Province and is a poetic place name sung as a bay with a view of Mount Fuji.
The first line, "okitsu kaze," means "the offshore wind." It begins with the same first line as 1597 in this book.
The second line, "yosamu ni nare ya," means "is it because the night has turned cold?" The interrogative particle "ya" added to the realis form "nare" infers the cause.
The third line, "tago no ura no," means "of Tago Bay" in Suruga. It is hypermetric, with six syllables.
The fourth line, "ama no moshiobi," is the fire over which the fisherfolk burn salt-weed. The scene of fisherfolk's fires echoes the salt-burning sequence beginning at 1590.
The last line, "taki masaruran," means "they must be burning them higher." It closes the kakari-musubi of "ya" in the second line with the attributive form of "ran." It contrasts cold and fire: the fires grow stronger as the night grows cold.
