Taki no oto matsu no arashi mo narenureba uchinuru hodo no yume wa misekeri - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

滝の音松の嵐も慣れぬれば
うち寝るほどの夢は見せけり

Roma-ji: Taki no oto matsu no arashi mo narenureba uchinuru hodo no yume wa misekeri
English Translation: The sound of the falls
and the storm among the pines,
now I've grown used to them,
for the space of a brief sleep
they have let me dream at last.
Meaning: Now that I have grown used to the roar of the falls and the storm in the pines, they have let me have a dream, if only for a short sleep.
Commentary: Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1624

Headnote: "When I presented a set of a hundred poems."
This is the fourth poem of the sequence on wind blowing about a mountain dwelling. Having grown used to the sound of the falls and the storm in the pines, the poet can at last dream for the space of a brief sleep. According to the headnote, it was composed when he presented a set of a hundred poems.
The author, "Ietaka Ason," was a son of Fujiwara no Mitsutaka and one of the compilers of the Shin Kokinshū. He studied poetry under Fujiwara no Shunzei.

The first line, "taki no oto," is the sound of the falls heard ceaselessly at a mountain dwelling.
The second line, "matsu no arashi mo," means "and the storm in the pines too." With "mo," it lists the storm with the falls as the noisy sounds of mountain life.
The third line, "narenureba," means "since I have grown used to them." The realis form with "ba" expresses a settled condition. Where 1621 in this book supposed growing used to it with "narenaba," here the poet has already grown used to it.
The fourth line, "uchinuru hodo no," means "for the space of a brief sleep." "Uchi" is a prefix adding a sense of lightness.
The last line, "yume wa misekeri," means "they have let me dream." "Keri" expresses exclamation at a realization, singing of the short dream finally won by growing used to the storm. Against the storm that made life hard in the preceding poem, it depicts the poet after growing used to it.
