Yo o somuku yama no minami no matsukaze ni koke no koromo ya yosamu naruran - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

世を背く山の南の松風に
苔の衣や夜寒なるらん

Roma-ji: Yo o somuku yama no minami no matsukaze ni koke no koromo ya yosamu naruran
English Translation: In the southern hills
where you've turned your back on the world,
in the wind of the pines
does your robe of moss, I wonder,
feel the chill of night?
Meaning: In the wind through the pines on the southern mountain where you have turned from the world, does your mossy robe feel the chill of night?
Commentary: Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1663

Headnote: "Sent to an acquaintance who had gone into retreat at Kumano."
This is the second poem of the sequence on those secluded at Kumano. Thinking of a friend in retreat at Kumano, the poet wonders whether his mossy robe is cold at night in the pine wind of the southern mountains where he has renounced the world. According to the headnote, it was sent to a close acquaintance who had gone into retreat at Kumano.
The author, "Anpō Hōshi," was a great-grandson of Minamoto no Tōru and a monk who lived at the Kawara-in, Tōru's former residence. He was one of the Thirty-Six Later Poetic Immortals.

The first line, "yo o somuku," means "where one renounces the world," modifying "mountain," which follows.
The second line, "yama no minami no," means "of the mountains to the south" of the capital, referring to Kumano in Kii Province. It takes up the Otonashi River of Kumano in the preceding poem.
The third line, "matsukaze ni," means "in the wind through the pines."
The fourth line, "koke no koromo ya," means "the coarse robe of a monk." "Ya" is an interrogative particle.
The last line, "yosamu naruran," closes the kakari-musubi of "ya" with the attributive form of "ran," imagining the night chill of distant Kumano. Where the preceding poem asked for word from the practitioner's side, here one left in the capital thinks of the practitioner.
