Oshimu tomo namida ni tsuki mo kokoro kara narenuru sode ni aki o uramite - Shin Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

惜しむとも涙に月も心から
馴れぬる袖に秋を恨みて

Roma-ji: Oshimu tomo namida ni tsuki mo kokoro kara narenuru sode ni aki o uramite
English Translation: Though I grieve its passing,
the moon too, of its own will,
in my tears, has grown
familiar with my sleeves,
resentful of autumn's end.
Meaning: Though I grieve at autumn's passing, the moon too, of its own accord, lodges in my tears and, on the sleeves it has grown familiar with, seems to resent the departing autumn.

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the feeling of personal grievance, at the Poetry Office."
This is the eighth and last poem of the sequence composed at the Poetry Office on personal grievance. The moon lodges of its own accord in the tears she sheds at autumn's passing and, on the sleeves it has grown familiar with, resents the departing autumn along with her. In the moon lodged in her tear-soaked sleeves she sees her own sorrow.
The author, "Kōtaigōgū no Daibu Shunzei no Musume," is Shunzei's Daughter. The daughter of Fujiwara no Moriyori and Hachijō-in no Sanjō, she was adopted by her grandfather Fujiwara no Shunzei. She became the wife of Minamoto no Michitomo.

The first line, "oshimu tomo," means "though I grieve at autumn's passing." "Tomo" marks a concessive supposition.
The second line, "namida ni tsuki mo," means "the moon too, in my tears," moonlight reflected in the dew of tears.
The third line, "kokoro kara," means "of its own heart, of its own will," the moon lodging in her tears of its own accord.
The fourth line, "narenuru sode ni," means "on the sleeves it has grown familiar with." Like "the moon I grow familiar with" and the "sleeves" of 1758 in this book, it echoes within the sequence the conceit of the moon lodged in tears on the sleeve.
The last line, "aki o uramite," means "resenting autumn." Breaking off on "te" to leave a lingering resonance, it closes the sequence of personal grievance at the Poetry Office with a lament for autumn.
