神風や豊御幣になびく四手
かけて仰ぐと言ふもかしこし

Roma-ji: Kamikaze ya toyomitegura ni nabiku shide kakete aogu to iu mo kashikoshi
English Translation: Divine wind of Ise—
on the rich offering wands
the paper streamers sway;
to say I hold you high in heart
is itself too bold a word.
Meaning: In the divine wind, paper streamers flutter on the rich offering wands—yet even to say that I hold the god in my heart and look up to him is a thing too awesome to speak.
Commentary: Book Nineteen Poems on the Gods 1876

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "From among poems on the Great Shrine."
This is the sixth poem in the sequence concerning the Great Shrine of Ise. It shows paper streamers on the offering wands fluttering in the divine wind and says that even to declare one looks up to the god in one's heart is too awesome. Like the preceding poem, it is one of the poems on the Great Shrine. It expresses the depth of reverence for the god as a hesitation to put it into words.
No author is named in the original, and the poem is treated as continuing from the author of the preceding poem, Retired Emperor Go-Toba.

The first line, "kamikaze ya," is the same as the first lines of poems 1871 and 1874 of this book. Here it also carries the scene of the divine wind setting the offering wands astir.
The second line, "toyomitegura ni," means "on the rich and splendid offering wands"; "toyo" is a term of praise.
The third line, "nabiku shide," means "paper streamers swaying in the wind."
In the fourth line, "kakete aogu to," "kakete" is a pivot word joining "hanging" the streamers and "holding" in heart or word. The figure looking up at the streamer-hung wands is overlaid with looking up to the god held in one's heart.
The last line, "iu mo kashikoshi," means "even to say it is too awesome." Where "nagameba ya" in the preceding poem longed to gaze upon the moon of the sacred precinct, this poem holds back, finding it awesome even to say one looks up to the god; the two poems by the same author form a pair of the wish to see and restraint in speech.
