Book Nineteen Poems on the Gods 1899
Headnote: "Sent to Suō no Naishi when he visited the Ōharano Festival."
This is the first of two poems on Mount Oshio at Ōharano. It calls on the wind sweeping down from Mount Oshio to blow with care for a thousand ages, lest it scatter the crimson leaves that even the god holds dear. According to the headnote, the poet sent it to Suō no Naishi when he visited the Ōharano Festival. The regret for the leaves the god loves is overlaid with a prayer for the festival's lasting continuance.
The author, Fujiwara no Koreie, was an official of the late Heian period.
The Ōharano Festival was the festival of the Ōharano Shrine in the western outskirts of Kyoto. The Ōharano Shrine, which received the god of Kasuga, was a clan shrine of the Fujiwara and stands at the foot of Mount Oshio.
The first line, "chiyo made mo," means "for a thousand ages to come."
The second line, "kokoro shite fuke," means "blow with care," calling to the wind in the imperative, and the poem breaks here.
The third line, "momijiba o," means "the crimson leaves."
In the fourth line, "kami mo Oshio no," "oshio" is a pivot word joining "oshi," "to hold dear" the leaves, and Mount Oshio.
The last line, "yamaoroshi no kaze," is the wind sweeping down the mountain, ending on a noun. The one addressed in the second line is placed last, an inversion. From Kasuga in the preceding poems, it moves to Ōharano, which received the god of Kasuga. Jien's next poem also tells of Mount Oshio.
