Headnote: "Composed and offered at Kitano."
This is a poem offered to the Kitano Tenmangū. On waking and putting things together, the poet cries aloud, thinking of the dream of long ago in Tsukushi, where a heart was spent in grief. According to the headnote, it was composed and offered at Kitano. It thinks with sympathy of the misfortune of Sugawara no Michizane, exiled to Tsukushi, and draws close to his heart.
No author is named in the original, and the poem is treated as continuing from the author of the preceding poem, Jien.
Kitano refers to the Kitano Tenmangū in Kyoto, which enshrines Sugawara no Michizane as Tenman Tenjin. Michizane was demoted to Dazaifu and died there.
The first line, "samenureba," means "when I have awakened," the perfective "nure" of "nu" followed by "ba."
The second line, "omoiawasete," means "setting dream beside reality."
The third line, "ne o zo naku," means "I cry aloud," closing the particle "zo" with the attributive "naku" in kakari-musubi, and the poem breaks here.
In the fourth line, "kokoro tsukushi no," "tsukushi" is a pivot word joining "tsukushi," a heart "spent," and Tsukushi, where Michizane was exiled.
The last line, "inishie no yume," is the dream of long ago, ending on a noun. Michizane's days in Tsukushi are called a fleeting dream. It answers poem 1853 of this book, in which Tenman Tenjin spoke of the plum at Anrakuji in Tsukushi, both poems thinking of Michizane in Tsukushi.
