Mushi no goto koe ni tatete wa nakanedomo namida nomi koso shita ni nagarure - Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

虫のごと声に立てては泣かねども
涙のみこそ下に流るれ

Roma-ji: Mushi no goto koe ni tatete wa nakanedomo namida nomi koso shita ni nagarure
English Translation: Though, unlike insects,
I do not raise my voice
and cry aloud,
it is only my tears
that flow down, hidden within.
Meaning: I do not cry aloud as the insects do, yet my tears alone keep flowing, hidden deep within.
Commentary: Book Twelve Love Poems II 581

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poet says that he does not cry aloud like autumn insects, but his tears alone flow unseen within him. Contrasting the loudly singing insects with himself weeping in silence, he expresses the depth of a sorrow of love that cannot be shown. Around this point in the book, poems that bring in autumn images follow one after another.
Kiyohara no Fukayabu was a poet of the early to mid Heian period, the grandfather of Kiyohara no Motosuke and great-grandfather of Sei Shōnagon. He served as Assistant in the Bureau of Palace Artisans and was known as a skilled koto player. One of his poems was chosen for the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

First line, "mushi no goto": goto, like gotoku, means "like." He cites the insects that sing loudly in autumn. Whereas the previous poem, 578, overlaid the poet on the cuckoo, here the insects and the poet are contrasted.
Second line, "koe ni tatete wa": "raising my voice"; the particle wa corresponds with the negative that follows.
Third line, "nakanedomo": ne is the perfective form of the negative zu, and with the concessive domo it means "though I do not cry." The insects' naku, "to sing," resonates with the poet's naku, "to weep."
Fourth line, "namida nomi koso": the binding particle koso pairs with nagarure in the final line, stressing that even without voice, the tears at least flow.
Fifth line, "shita ni nagarure": shita means the inner side that does not show, within the heart. Nagarure is the perfective form resolving koso. In 591 and 607 of this book, shita ni is also used to sing of love that does not show, so the same word recurs within the book.
