Waga koi ni Kurabu no yama no sakurabana ma naku chiru tomo kazu wa masaraji - Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

わが恋にくらぶの山の桜花
間なく散るとも数はまさらじ

Roma-ji: Waga koi ni Kurabu no yama no sakurabana ma naku chiru tomo kazu wa masaraji
English Translation: If compared to my love,
on Mount Kurabu the
cherry blossoms,
though they scatter without pause,
would not surpass it in number.
Meaning: Compared with my love, the cherry blossoms of Mount Kurabu, though they fall without ceasing, could never outnumber my thoughts of you.

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poet says that even if the cherry blossoms of Mount Kurabu fall without pause, their petals could not outnumber his thoughts of love. The mountain's name, Kurabu, is punned with kurabu, "to compare," and by exaggeratedly comparing the number of falling blossoms with the multitude of his feelings, he expresses the depth of his love. Following the two preceding poems, it again sings of cherry blossoms.
Sakanoue no Korenori was a poet of the early Heian period, a descendant of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and the son of Sakanoue no Yoshikage. He served as Provisional Junior Secretary of Yamato and Assistant Governor of Kaga. He was also known as a master of kemari football and is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals.

First line, "waga koi ni": "to my love," joining with kurabu in the second line to mean "compared with my love."
Second line, "Kurabu no yama no": kurabu is a pun on Kurabu, the name of a mountain, and kurabu, "to compare." Mount Kurabu is said to be an old name for Mount Kurama.
Third line, "sakurabana": following 588 and 589 of this book, it sings of cherry blossoms, so three love poems on blossoms stand in a row.
Fourth line, "ma naku chiru tomo": ma naku means without pause, and tomo is a concessive hypothesis, "even if they fall ceaselessly."
Fifth line, "kazu wa masaraji": ji is the auxiliary of negative conjecture, closing with "the number of falling blossoms would not surpass my thoughts of love."
